Two businessmen from Herisau laid the foundations for the oldest textile company in Appenzell in 1814 when they established the firm Appretur Meyer & Mittelholzer on the banks of the Glattbach river. Laurenz Meyer and Johann Konrad Tribelhorn converted the private enterprise into a public limited company (AG) in 1873. It was renamed AG Cilander 14 years later. Nowadays, AG CILANDER boasts several production plants. Taking pride of place are the production centres at Glattbach (Herisau) and Isenhammer (Flawil), which have grown over the decades and are constantly being modernised..

1814 The finishing firm "Meyer und Mittelholzer" is founded at Glattbach, Herisau

1886 A dyeworks is set up in Herisau

1912 Invention of the organdy process for the manufacture of Swiss cotton organdy which went on to become famous throughout the world
